Crythos & Babette

Post by Crythos » Fri Oct 21, 2005 6:06 pm

Crythos arrived in Fairhaven as a babe in arms. The Tryker capital was a long way from what it is today, just a collection of huts on the shoreline and the biggest Trykers working and sweating in the sun to drive in the first of the pilings for the Piers that form the Capital we know today.
Crythos never saw much of his parents they were gifted foragers and were in great demand to supply the crafters of the village as it was back then. There were still traces of the Kitin horde in the lakes creating a constant need for weapons and armour, Fairhaven needed defending and the lakes needed clearing.
His parents would leave at first light and often not return until after sunset. Sometimes they would return empty handed with tales of running and hiding and sometimes they would return grim faced covered in blood and dust whispering tales to others but not for the ears of the toddler Crythos.
While his parents were away Cry would be tended by the crafters on the shoreline, they would sit in a circle at the sight where the stables stand today, many other Tryker children used to play in this protective circle and so it came that these children and the crafters became a sort of extended family for Crythos.
Many years passed and Crythos started to take an interest in the smaller items the crafters made and the intricacies of how they went together, Cry started fiddling with cast off materials and found he had some skill with his fingers.
Amongst the Trykers on the shoreline work progressed and Fairhaven grew. New faces would come and sometimes-familiar ones would disappear. Crythos never paid much attention, enjoying the sunshine and swimming amongst the busy workmen or watching the crafters until one day his parents didn’t come back.
Cry had never known a family life, as others were now beginning to enjoy in the new security of the growing Fairhaven, but up to now the darker side of life had never touched him. He began to take an interest in some of the quieter conversations and found that he was allowed to listen, he guessed it was time he became a more active part of the community that protected him. Many of the tales told when a Tryker didn’t return mentioned Kitins or Kami lightning, he had never seen a Kitin or a Kami but he stored these tales in a dark heavy place in his heart.
Cry continued to learn and found he could turn out a half-decnt bowpistol but rifles were his passion and he took his place in the circle of crafters. He had started too hunt a bit too mostly hiding behind the big warriors doing what damage he could with his guns and also learning to tend the wounds of others a bit as well, this was his life and all the time people came and Fairhaven grew.
One day returning from hunting a strange light shone over Fairhaven, as he grew closer to home he could see something that looked like it was made of highly polished bone hovering in the sky and another object of similar construction was being lowered too the ground. Cry was not alarmed by the strange black clad figures standing around as the village elders were amongst them and seemed to pay them some respect but showed no fear. One of the older crafter spoke of a material called “metal” and pacts for “teleportation” Cry was confused and guessed he would be told later. He was burning with curiosity though and moved closer, as he drew near the device on the ground one of the dark clad figures stepped aside to allow him to approach, he ran his hand over the surface, it was like nothing he had ever touched before and the finer details were beyond his comprehensive in a material that seemed so hard.
Crythos was a little dumbstruck by all this but the sound of shouting got his attention, a small group of Cloppas had strayed close and Trykers were grabbing their weapons and running to fend them off. A good friend of Cry’s fell clutching his leg and Crythos reached for his pistol…. He never got to fire, either side of him two of the figures in black had extended their arms and what looked like lumps of brilliant sunshine from a lake ripple knocked the Cloppas down. Cry had seen magic before, even had some skill with it but never liked using it as he had the suspicion the Kami had used to strike his parents down, he would use it to help in an emergency but using it made him feel sick. This however was different the bolts of light had come from a device; he had seen something on one of the figures wrists. Crythos had met the Karavan and he was impressed. He always strove to improve the things he made and learn new things; these people had obviously been doing that for a long time indeed. The village elders although respectful to these Karavan didn’t seem to know to much, they spoke of “Jena” Crythos thought she must be their boss a bit like Stil Wyler was for the Trykers and decided maybe if he did a few favours for the Karavan he might get to meet this “Jena” and maybe, just maybe she would let him have some of the Karavan knowledge and he could help his people better.
Crythos grew, learned and travelled, he went to other lands and met other peoples, learned that his Lakeland home was part of Atys, he heard tales of intrigue and conflict.
One day amongst the wreckage of a Mek Train in Loria he found a wounded Tryker girl called Babette, many dead Fyros were around and Babette mumbled the word “Gerder” Cry knew what that meant he also guessed she had probably been destined to dance or wait on tables in some back street bar in Pyr. He tended her wounds and took her back too Fairhaven. He left her with the crafter circle sure she was in safe hands. About a week later Cry was strolling down the pier and there she was, she had gathered some pieces of armour and a battered magic amplifier pair. “I can heal” she said, “ I owe you and I will help you”. Cry didn’t trust magic but Babs was an honest sun loving Tryker like himself and they became inseparable. Some people whispered the word slave but they worked together and as they explored the lands it was more than master and servant their lives depended upon each other.
As the regions of Atys grew likeminded peoples seemed to be drawn together, Crythos and Babette became part of a group known as “Evolution” and with this band of Homins travelled the surface of Atys exploring, enjoying the sunshine and fighting the Kitin. Crythos is very happy with his “Evolution” family but also has friends in other places, even amongst the Mercenary “Samsara”. Testing times are too come and the face of Atys may change, Jena may come and Cry may get the new knowledge he desires to help his people, but where conflict and politics may interfere he hopes friendship and challenge will endure to drive Atys forward to the future.
